Do I need a Visa?
South African passport holders do not need a visa to visit Thailand for tourism stays of up to 60 days under the visa‑exemption scheme. You simply present your passport at immigration on arrival and get a stamp allowing entry for tourism.
Important notes:
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel and evidence of funds.
From May 1, 2025, all travellers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival, this isn’t a visa but a required entry form.
If you plan to stay longer or for purposes other than tourism, different visa rules may apply. Let me know if you want details on extending stays or other visa types!
Can people in Thailand speak english?
Yes! English is widely spoken in tourist areas of Thailand, including Phuket, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and popular islands. Most hotels, tour operators, restaurants, and shops catering to visitors have English-speaking staff.
However, in rural or less-touristy areas, English may be limited, so basic Thai phrases or a translation app can be helpful. Signs at airports, major attractions, and public transport in tourist zones are usually in both Thai and English.
How is transportation in Thailand?
Thailand has taxis, tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps, buses, trains, and domestic flights, making travel convenient
What cultural etiquette should I know?
Respect temples by dressing modestly, remove shoes before entering homes or religious sites, and avoid touching anyone’s head.
How do I plan when it comes to spending money in Thailand?
- Change Rands to Thai Baht
-
Bring some Thai Baht with you for your first day.
-
You can exchange money at banks, airports, or currency exchange offices.
-
ATMs at convenience stores like 7-Eleven also accept international cards.
-
Cash vs Cards
-
Thailand is still cash-friendly; small restaurants, markets, and temples often only accept cash.
-
Use credit cards for hotels, large shops, and trains when possible.
-
Daily Budget
-
Meals, transport, and sightseeing usually cost around R500–R1,000 per day per person.
-
Withdraw or exchange money as needed, don’t carry too much at once.
✅ Tip: Plan your budget in Rands, then convert to Baht before your trip. This helps you avoid overspending and makes your trip smoother.
How far in advance should I book my travel?
For the best prices and availability, book flights and accommodation 3–6 months in advance. During peak seasons, like cherry blossom or autumn, aim for 6–8 months ahead.
✅ Tip: The earlier you plan, the smoother and more enjoyable your trip.
Is there another method to pay for the trip?
With i-Travel, planning your dream trip is easier with our flexible payment plan. Secure your booking with a deposit and pay the remaining balance in manageable instalments before your departure, making travel more affordable and stress-free.
